Funimation Celebrates Happy 25 With AKIRA On DVD/Blu-Ray Later This Year

Not going to lie. I have but to see Akira, and not due to the fact I haven't had any interest as I have always loved anime. But I guess that's just my luck, huh?

Nicely, although we are waiting for Non-Stop director Jaume Collet-Serra's newly announced restart of production for the $ 90 million-or-much less live action feature film with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson Killoran and Andrew Lazar producing for Warner Bros., FUNimation has plans to release the 25th Anniversary DVD/Blu-Ray of the classic 1988 animated film directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, who wrote the original 1982 manga for Kodansha. Crunchyroll reports that FUNimation's release will come in the form of a DVD/Blu-Ray combo pack, featuring both English dub tracks from the Streamline (1988) and Pioneer (2001) versions, as effectively as the Japanese track with English subtitles.

Check out the new Geek Week trailer for Akira and stay tuned for a release date!

SYNOPSIS:
Tokyo has risen from the ashes of Globe War III to turn out to be a dark and unsafe megalopolis infested with gangs and terrorists. The government seethes with corruption and only maintains a token handle more than the potent military that prevents total chaos and hides the secrets of the previous. Childhood close friends Tetsuo and Kaneda plunge into Neo-Tokyo's darkest secret when their motorcycle gang encounters a military operation to retrieve an escaped experimental subject. Tetsuo, captured by the military, is subjected to experiments that make him a powerful psychic, but, sadly for Neo-Tokyo, Tetsuo's powers rage out of control and he lashes out at the world that has oppressed him! Practically nothing can quit the destructive forces that Tetsuo wields except possibly the last boy to destroy Tokyo.
